Your Guide for the Series.

I’m Debbi McCune, a dementia doula, educator, and consultant. My work is shaped by both professional training and my own experience, including my father’s dementia and walking alongside my husband through more than 13 years of dementia. I bring both perspectives to our conversations along with plenty of room for your questions and experiences.

What is a Dementia Guidance Group?

Dementia affects more than the person living with the diagnosis.

It can change how a person communicates, how they relate to others, their routines and roles, and how they navigate everyday life, and often brings a lot of questions about what is happening and what may come next.Dementia Guidance Groups offer a small, welcoming place to learn about dementia, ask questions, share what you’re navigating, and gain practical information that can help you better understand and respond to changes along the way.

This isn’t a lecture series, and you don’t need to know anything about dementia before you join. Each session includes education, conversation, and time for the questions that matter to the people in the group.

What We’ll Talk About

Session 1 — What Is Happening?
We’ll begin with what dementia actually is, including some of the symptoms and behaviors that can occur beyond memory loss. We’ll also talk about what each person is navigating so our conversations can focus on what matters most to the group.

Session 2 — What Should I Expect?
We’ll talk about how dementia changes over time and what those changes may look like in everyday life. We’ll also talk about why the person you know so well, their routines, preferences, personality, and what matters to them, can help you understand some of the changes you’re seeing and find ways to support them.

Session 3 — How Do I Navigate This?
We’ll explore practical ways to respond when communication becomes harder, behaviors change, or something that used to work no longer does. We’ll talk about ways to adjust, find a new approach, and stay connected to the person you love through the changes.

Session 4 — What Comes Next?
We’ll look ahead at changes and decisions that may arise as dementia progresses, talk about preparing without trying to predict every turn, and make plenty of room for the questions that have come up throughout our four weeks together.

What You’ll Get

Four weekly 75-minute live online sessions, practical dementia education you can actually use, time to ask questions about what you’re experiencing, and the benefit of learning alongside a small group of no more than eight people.

No special preparation is needed. Come with your questions and whatever you’re navigating right now.
